The first two racing headlines I saw today on www.jayski.com: 1. "more on crew chief change for Junior", and 2. "Evernham no longer tied to RPM." Could it be?? I think I may need someone to pinch me.
After years of loathing Evernham as a crew chief (common for #3 fans) I have realized there are probably only 3 people who could take Jr back to success. Tony Eury Sr., crew chief for Jr's 2 Nationwide Championships, is the only crew chief I've heard on the radio who Junior wouldn't question. Larry McReynolds, crew chief who took Earhardt Sr to victory lane at the Daytona 500, is widely respected and would be quickly trusted. And Evernham, whose ability to make winners out of new talent (Gordon and Kahne) is unquestionable.
The sobering truth is that the safe bet would be on Evernham either staying in broadcast or beginning or buying a new team. The desire for the 100 hour+/week life of a crew chief is probably no longer there. But then again...if he is looking for a new challenge, what could be a better choice?? I can hope.
